Interesting on the invisible paths.
I think the sign thing was just meant to be something generic since it's in the background. I just hope you won't try to turn it into the next "L is Real".
As for the beta Toad, there was probably supposed to be part of some other plot point (something about Peach being taken across some river), but got cut out, and somehow the Toad that was supposed to tell Mario about said plot point got left in the data.

Also, that beta dialogue does not make no sense whatsoever. THIS beta dialogue (from another game) makes no sense whatsoever:
